A night of short local films at the historic Egyptian Theater raises money for the trails northern Utah loves

If you’ve ever hiked, biked or skied above Ogden, there’s a good chance someone has filmed the same trail you were on. On Thursday, Nov. 5, those films go up on the big screen at the Ogden Mountain Film Festival at Peery’s Egyptian Theater.

The festival is presented by the Trails Foundation of Northern Utah (TFNU), the nonprofit that builds, maintains and advocates for non-motorized trails across the region. It’s a local event in every sense. Every film had to be shot in Ogden and the surrounding mountains, and it had to highlight the public lands and open spaces that make the area an outdoor destination.

Made by locals, for locals

TFNU opened submissions to filmmakers of every skill level, from seasoned pros to weekend adventurers with a camera. Entries cover the full range of what people do in Ogden’s backcountry: hiking, trail running, mountain biking, skiing, climbing, paddling and fishing. Prizes include Best in Festival and a special award for the best film from TFNU’s Peak Challenge.

The films carry a message along with the action. TFNU asks filmmakers to show good trail etiquette and Leave No Trace principles, so the places on screen stay protected for the next generation.

Worth the drive

From Point of the Mountain, Ogden is about an hour north, and an evening at the Egyptian is part of the appeal. The 1920s Egyptian Revival movie palace on Washington Boulevard is one of the most striking venues in the state. Historic 25th Street, with its restaurants and shops, is a short walk away, so you can easily make a night of it.

Every ticket supports trail maintenance, stewardship and education across northern Utah. Wasatch Front trail users from Salt Lake to Utah County benefit from that work whenever they head north.
