Early December Utah High School Basketball Games that Should Prove Something

December will reshuffle the preseason rankings!

As every Utah hoops season reminds us, preseason rankings rarely survive the first month intact. December has a way of reshuffling expectations as teams settle in, and early stars emerge. It’s always fun to see how the coaches’ rankings hold up after the first 4-5 weeks—and how different things look again once brackets drop and tournament time arrives in mid to late February. Throughout the season, Mountain & Main will keep its focus on the teams along the Wasatch Front, bringing you updates, commentary, and standout athlete profiles as the story of Utah high school basketball unfolds.

Early games in December that matter.

December 2 — 7:00 PM

• Duchesne at Rowland Hall
Why this game matters:
Rowland Hall sophomore guard Jrue Miller has opened the season on absolute fire, dropping 42 and 41 in his first two outings. Regardless of classification, back-to-back 40-point nights demand attention. Duchesne will try to slow him down, but with the game on Rowland Hall’s home floor, the rims could feel extra inviting. Can Miller keep the scoring binge alive? Link to watch this game.

December 4 — 12:00 PM

• Highland vs. American Fork @ Corner Canyon HS
Why this game matters:
Highland enters as the preseason #3 in 5A and has looked the part with two impressive early wins. American Fork’s 1–2 early record is deceptive—both losses came in tight battles against Bingham (#3 in 6A) and Timpview (#2 in 5A). And it’s important to note: American Fork was the preseason #1 in 6A. On a neutral court at Corner Canyon, this matchup becomes a true early-season proving ground for two programs expecting to be in the championship conversation come February.

December 6 — 12:20 PM

• Lone Peak vs. Bingham @ Corner Canyon HS
Why this game matters:
Bingham may have drawn the toughest opening stretch in the state, already notching signature wins over the preseason #1 in 6A (American Fork) and #1 in 5A (Olympus). Lone Peak’s storied program has stumbled early, but a victory here would flip the narrative quickly. Another neutral-site showdown at Corner Canyon only heightens the stakes.

December 9 — 7:00 PM

• Bingham at Davis
Why this game matters:
There’s no let-up for Bingham. After the Lone Peak matchup, the Miners head north to take on Davis, the preseason #2 in 6A, in one of Utah’s toughest home environments. This one feels like a definitive early-December measuring stick for both squads. If Bingham pulls out a road win here, they’ll own one of the strongest early-season résumés anywhere in the state.

Stay with Mountain & Main all season as we spotlight the biggest matchups, rising stars, and can’t-miss moments in Utah high school basketball. The best games along the Wasatch Front are just getting started.
