Utah Sports Ink Game of the Week: American Fork vs. Corner Canyon
As we dive deeper into the Utah high school basketball season, all eyes are on Region 3 where a pivotal matchup looms between the No. 4-ranked American Fork Cavemen and the No. 13 Corner Canyon Chargers (Desert News rankings as of Jan. 11). This clash, spotlighted as the Utah Sports Ink Game of the Week, could solidify American Fork's grip on the top spot in the region following their impressive victory over Lone Peak on Tuesday, January 13. With both teams battle-tested against tough out-of-state competition, expect a high-intensity showdown that showcases some of the state's top talent.
American Fork features a unique roster of 10 seniors.
American Fork Cavemen: Building Momentum in Region Play
Entering the week with a 9-6 record as of January 12, the Cavemen have since notched a crucial win over Lone Peak, pushing them to 10-6 and claiming sole possession of first place in Region 3. A victory against Corner Canyon would further cement their position as frontrunners heading into the heart of conference play.
American Fork's schedule has been no joke— they've played 16 games total, with nine against out-of-state opponents where they've gone 5-4. This rugged slate has prepared them well, as evidenced by standout performances like their 67-56 takedown of No. 7 Davis on January 6 and a convincing win over No. 5 Highland. Even in defeat, the Cavemen have shown grit: a narrow 60-62 loss to No. 1 Timpview on November 26 and a 63-59 heartbreaker to Bingham in their season opener at home.

Head Coach Ryan Cuff credits the team's chemistry and challenging non-conference games for their growth. Speaking on his roster of 10 seniors, Cuff said, “These boys really love and care about each other. They are all amazing teammates and student athletes.” On the out-of-state gauntlet, he added, “We love playing out of state and play different teams that are really good. It prepares us for our region and state tournament. We always see some of the top players in the country and these kids will always have these memories. Most importantly they bond and get more connected as a team during this time.”
Leading the charge for American Fork are senior standouts Jax Clark and Bryce Mella. Clark, a 6'8" forward, averages 15 points and 7 rebounds per game, providing a dominant presence in the paint. Mella, a 6'5" guard and Utah State commit, tops the scoring charts at 16.75 points per game, blending size with perimeter skill to keep defenses honest.
Corner Canyon Chargers: Seeking a Signature Win
The Chargers sit at 8-8 overall, but their record doesn't tell the full story. Corner Canyon has faced one of the toughest schedules in the state, playing 11 games against out-of-state teams plus a matchup with national powerhouse Layton Christian (not part of the UHSAA system). Against this elite competition, they've managed a 5-7 mark, building resilience for the stretch run.
In their limited four games against UHSAA foes, Corner Canyon split the results with a notable 62-58 road win at Orem on November 26, but they fell short in a 54-45 loss to Lone Peak on January 9. As they ramp up region play, this game against American Fork represents a golden opportunity to climb the standings and boost their RPI ranking.
The Chargers boast a balanced offensive attack, with four players contributing significantly. Sophomore Josh Tolman, a versatile 6'5" forward/guard, leads the way at 16.31 points per game. Senior point guard Dillon Roberts (6'1") adds 14.75 points, while senior shooting guard/small forward Tyler Mortensen (6'4") chips in 12.06. Junior power forward Mo Brown (6'8") rounds out the group at 8.69 points, offering length and athleticism inside.
What to Watch For
This Game of the Week pits American Fork's senior-laden experience against Corner Canyon's youthful depth and scoring distribution. With both teams hardened by out-of-state battles, look for a fast-paced, physical contest that could come down to the wire.
